How to Save Suds Water with the Built-in SUDSWATER-SAVER

Custom DeLuxe WCD-59, DeLuxe WD-59 and Super WS-59

(Suds water stored in washer cabinet) Now - with the Built-in SudsWater-Saver, you can save the sudsy wash water from your first load and use it again in as many loads as you wish. No need of an extra set tub, suds water is stored right in the washer itself!

OPEN

CLOSED

Put first load of clothes in washer and set controls; choosing a HOT water wash for most effective re-use of suds; set other controls as desired.

H

Hook OPEN drain hose over edge of sink, drain or laundry tub at start of first load.

After "LINT-AWAY WASH" -during the pause BEFORE first "Spin" starts, pull Timer knob OUT to stop washer.

Roll rubber ball back over end of hose to CLOSE it.

Start washer and let spin until water leaves washer tub. (Water is now stored inside washer cabinet.)
Page 13:

Stop washer, take out clothes and set aside temporarily. Then put in second load of clothes.

Roll ball back from end of hose and hook OPEN hose over washer tub.

Custom DeLuxe and DeLuxe models: Select washing time for second load; push Timer knob IN and immediately turn to Right until agitation starts.

Super Model: When selecting wash time, add an extra 2 minutes for water to return to tub. For example, if you choose NORMAL setting, move Timer an extra notch toward HEAVY setting.

After tub has filled with stored water, hook OPEN hose back over laundry tub. Let second load complete full cycle and take out clothes.

Put first load back in tub for rinsing: turn Timer knob to start of F ILL (next to RINSE), push IN and let washer complete cycle.

NOTE: This will save about 10 gallons of water when you are washing a full load of clothes. If you want to save suds water for additional loads, simply repeat the same steps listed above.

Before you start: Remember to close drain or put stopper in tub where wash water will be stored. When you are NOT going to re-use suds water, leave drain open.

HERE'S ALL YOU DO .. .

Wash first load of clothes in usual way. When setting controls, we suggest that you choose a HOT water wash to insure hot water for the next load.

When you're ready for the second load: Put in clothes, adding a little extra detergent if desired.

Turn Wash Temperature Selector to SUDSWATER-SAVER setting; set Timer as desired and push knob IN to let second load complete full cycle,

That's all. Both loads have been washed automatically and you've washed TWO full loads in the same suds water -or, as many loads as you like!

NOTE: If you want to continue using same suds water for additional loads, leave drain closed each time. If not, open drain after washer has filled.
Page 15:

How to HAND-CONTROL

YOUR WASHER

Your Frigidaire Washer is completely automatic, of course. Once you set the Automatic Wash Timer and push knob IN, the entire cycle is completed automatically. But you can take over at any time and wash the way you please. Look-it's easy!

Push IN to START

PULL OUT to STOP

With Timer knob IN, turn to RIGHT when you want to -

• Shorten any step in the cycle, like FILL, RINSE or SPIN.

For example, when Timer reaches RINSE or DRY, turn knob to right. Each click heard will save 40 seconds on NORMAL load; 27 seconds on SMALL load setting.

Leave Timer knob OUT and turn to RIGHT when you want to -

• Repeat a Rinse

• Skip any step in the cycle

• Lengthen any step

For example, for an extra Rinse: After washer has stopped, pull Timer knob OUT, turn to RIGHT to start of FILL (after Rinse Spin) -and push IN.

NOTE: On DeLuxe and Super washers, when shortening the fill for a smaller load of clothes, be sure tub is at least slightly more than half full of water.
Page 16:

water temperature

Generally HOT water is needed to remove heavy soil. However, with man-made fabrics such as Dacron, Orion, Nylon, etc., a cooler wash will reduce wrinkling and make ironing easier.

Here are suggested settings for- WASH WATER

HOT-(140° to 160° F.-much hotter than your hand can stand)-Normally soiled white and color-fast cottons, linens, rayons and all heavy soil. WARM -Lightly soiled cottons, linens and rayons; woolens; Nylons, Orlons and other man-made fabrics; Wash & Wear garments; rubberized materials. COLD -Use only for very lightly soiled garments. Will reduce wrinkling in man-made fabrics. May also be used for soaking some stains.

RINSE WATER

WARM-Normally soiled white and fast-color cottons, linens and rayons; woolens; and all heavy soil.

COLD-Lightly soiled cottons, linens and rayons; man-made fabrics; Wash & Wear garments; plastics and nonfast colors.

Custom DeLuxe Model has separate Wash and Rinse Selectors.

DeLuxe Models have Wash Selector; deliver Warm Rinse automatically. For Cold Rinse, turn off Hot water faucet after washer fills for wash and agitation starts.

On Super Model, select Wash and Rinse Temperature desired by adjusting faucets as washer fills-see Pg. 9.

soaps and detergents

SOFT WATER

Any good soap or detergent will do. HARD WATER

Because soaps will form curds or scum with hard water, detergents are recommended. If you prefer soap, it should only be used with a water softener like Calgon or Tex. See package for quantity. While softener can be added to wash water, it should always be added to the rinse when soap is used.

HOW MUCH?

An adequate amount of soap or detergent is ESSENTIAL for sparkling-clean clothes. The amount to use will depend on type of water and amount of soil in the clothes.

SOAP:

Start with y2 cup for NORMAL load; add more if necessary to maintain active suds (about 2") during wash.

ALL-PURPOSE DETERGENTS:

High Sudsing-With packaged types such as Cheer, Fab, Rinso Blue and Tide, start with 1/2 CUP for NORMAL load. Add more as necessary to maintain active suds level (about 2") throughout wash.

Low Sudsing-Ad, All and Dash are designed to prevent oversudsing in the washer. They will produce little or no suds. Follow directions on package carefully for proper amount.

Liquids-such as Hum and Wisk, start with 1/3 cup. Add more as required to maintain suds level.

NOTE: For best results, use liquid detergent for COLD water washing.
Page 17:

WASHING

sort and make ready

Sort clothes into groups that wash

well together-

Separate white and color-fast fabrics from non-fast colors.

Separate sheer and delicate fabrics from heavy, sturdy fabrics.

Separate heavily soiled clothes from those lightly soiled.

Separate "lint producers" like diapers, cotton flannels and coarse linen tea towels.

For best results with Wash & Wear garments, wash separately. Do not overcrowd the tub.

Put small articles inside a pillowcase or mesh bag.

Don't group all large articles (like sheets) together. Mix large and smaller pieces in the load.

And while you sort-look them over.

Unfold napkins and tablecloths. Close zippers; unhook hooks and eyes; unbutton buttons and remove detachable belts, trimmings and shoulder pads.

And always turn pockets inside out. Watch for "troublemakers" like facial tissue, paper matches, chewing gum, a child's crayon, pins and other sharp articles.

Suggestion: Check tag on garment

before washing a new garment for the first time. On many items, you will find recommendations for laundering on a tag or label attached. For best results, follow these suggestions.

Many garments labeled "drip dry" can be washed and dried in a Frigidaire Automatic Washer and Dryer.

pretreating

Pretreat clothes before washing-

Heavily soiled local areas such as

collar and cuff edges, children's underwear, oil and grease spots:

• Just wet soiled area; sprinkle with soap or detergent to be used and rub in lightly with fingers or brush.

• You'll find liquid detergents convenient for pretreating.

• Pretreat local stains such as rust, grease, etc.-see Pg. 20.

soaking

• Soaking is optional, depending on type of soil and clothes being washed. For regular loads, use a Warm soak and about half the usual amount of detergent.

• For greasy and oily clothes, use a Warm soak and plenty of detergent. If desired, add cup ammonia or 14 cup washing soda.

• For industrial soil (flour, cement dust, etc.), or blood stains, use Cold soak and detergent.

• For diapers, use Cold soak and detergent. If desired, add 2 tablespoons borax or 1/2 cup bleach.

To Soak:

• Put in clothes. Let washer fill with water of desired temperature, and agitate long enough to dissolve detergent. Add bleach if desired. Pull Timer OUT and let clothes soak 10 to 20 minutes.

Note: Longer soaking may make soil more difficult to remove.

• After soaking, SPIN OUT DIRTY WATER BEFORE WASHING--turn Timer to SPIN and push IN.

• Now add soap or detergent, reset Timer to desired washing time, and wash in regular way.
Page 18:

loading

For maximum washing efficiency, DON'T pack clothes tightly into tub. drop them in LOOSELY like this:

Picture tub as if divided in 4 "sections" as shown: and drop soiled clothes LOOSELY into each "section." DON'T wind them around the Three-Ring Agitator or arrange in circular fashion.

Open sheets and tablecloths. Grasp in center like a tent. Start with a pointed end and ease into one of the sections, as shown, folding back and forth like ribbon candy.

Fold shirts with sleeves in and load into tub in loose folds. Drop in towels and pillowcases one at a time. REMEMBER-don't overload! Overloading reduces washing efficiency. See Typical Loads on Page 18.

bleaching

Remember that bleaches are not a substitute for detergents. Always add them to the wash water, not the rinse.

Liquid Bleach

• Chlorine type bleaches like Clorox, Roman Cleanser, White Sail, etc., are designed for cottons, linens and bulk of the family wash.

• Not recommended for silks and woolens. Check label before using on man-made fabrics.

Quantity-For regular use, add cup

to wash water for a NORMAL load.

For badly stained clothes, % cup.

Dry Bleach

• An all-purpose bleach such as Purex is safe for all fabrics except silk, wool and acetate.

• Mild types such as Snowy and Dextol are safe for all fabrics and can be used for light stains.

Quantity-follow package directions.

TO ADD BLEACH:

• Liquid bleach should be diluted before adding to wash water as shown in Step No. 6 in "Picture Tips" on Pages 7 or 9. For dry bleach, see instructions on packages.
Page 19:

WASHING

water conditioners

In hard water areas, a water conditioner or softener such as Calgon or Tex may be used in the rinse. If soap is used in hard water, it is ESSENTIAL that the rinse water be softened to avoid scum.

How to Use:

• For regular use, pour cup into the washer at start of rinse fill.

HANDY BLEACH DISPENSER CUP

Optional at minimum extra cost - saves diluting, waiting for washer to fill. Fits inside Agitator post-dilutes and dispenses bleach and dye under water, automatically.

To Use:

Remove Bleach Dispenser Cup before filling, as shown, to avoid spilling on clothes. Pour bleach-dry or liquid- directly into Dispenser Cup-no need to dilute. Replace filled cup inside Agitator and push Turquoise Cap firmly down into place.

Note: If using dry bleach on a Small load, add it to Dispenser Cup and fill cup with Hot water.

fabric softeners

Fabric softeners are sometimes used to reduce stiffness in line-dried clothes. They are excellent for reducing static electricity in man-made fabrics and particularly nice for lingerie.

How to use:

• Follow instructions on package for amount.

• Wait until start of the rinse fill, and pour directly into the washer. DON'T PUT FABRIC SOFTENER INTO THE WASH WATER along with detergent, bleach or bluing.

NEW RINSE CONDITIONER DISPENSER

Now available at small extra cost to beauty-rinse your clothes the easy way. Lets you add water conditioner or fabric softener- before you wash. Releases it into rinse water automatically.

To Use:

Trip release lever to open lid of dispenser. Pour in fabric softener or water conditioner and close lid. Carefully place filled dispenser in top of Agitator and press Turquoise Cap firmly down into place.

NOTE: If using dry rinse conditioner on SMALL load, dilute with water before pouring into dispenser.
Page 20:

starching

You can starch a full or partial load

of clothes right in the washer this

easy way:

• Select Warm wash water. Let washer fill until there is ample water to cover clothes being starched. With Timer knob pushed IN, turn to Right until agitation starts.

• Follow package directions for amount of starch and how to prepare. To estimate amount of water in tub, remember that a full washer tub is 10 gallons.

• Add starch while washer is agitating. When starch is completely mixed, pull Timer knob OUT to stop washer.

• Now add clothes previously washed and spun damp-dry. Push knob IN and let agitate about 1 minute.

• Pull knob OUT, advance to DRY and push IN. Let spin about 1 minute. Remove starched clothes.

stain removal

• See "Stain Removal Chart," Page 20, for how to treat specific stains.

• Treat all stains promptly. Avoid using hot water on unidentified stains; it may "set" the stain.

• Use mildest treatment first; if stain is not greasy, try sponging with cold water; for greasy stains, sponge with cleaning fluid.

• Choose stain remover to suit both stain and fabric-see chart on Page 20. Test remover first on an unexposed part of garment.

• Use short, light strokes; don't rub into fabric. Use chemicals and bleaches carefully to protect color. Rinse well to remove excess fluid.

Any of the popular brands - flake, bead or granule-may be put in the washer with soap or detergent for automatic distribution.

Page 21:

AUTOMATIC DYEING

Now you can give every kind of garment-from shag rugs to delicate lingerie-a colorful new lease on life with one setting of the dials. It's as easy as this:

1. Drop clean clothes LOOSELY into tub.

2. Dilute dye according to package directions.

3. Select a HOT wash and preferably a COLD rinse. On Custom DeLuxe model, set Load Selector on NORMAL.

4. Turn Timer knob to time desired: HEAVY for sturdy materials; NORMAL for lightweight, man-made garments. Push knob IN.

5. After tub has filled, and agitation starts-add dye solution by straining through piece of dampened cheese cloth.

6. That's all. When washer has finished cycle take out clothes.

And now with the Dispenser Cup (shown on Pg. 17), dyeing can be even easier. No straining, boiling or bother.

Just skip steps #2 and #5 above. Instead, do this: Pour all-purpose dye powder from package into Dispenser

Cup. Then place filled cup inside Agitator and press turquoise cap down into place. Dye will be diluted and dispensed automatically.

Care of Washer-Wipe off spill-overs from washer promptly.

After Dyeing Clothes-Add 1/4 cup of

detergent and 1/2 cup of liquid bleach.

Use a Hot wash; leave Load Selector (Custom DeLuxe Model) on NORMAL and let washer go through a complete cycle. Then wipe washer top and any traces of dye in tub.

Note: Although the Agitator and Dispenser Cup may become discolored, this will not rub off on clothes during subsequent washings, if washer has been cleaned as suggested above.

TIMELY TIPS

• Remove all the spots and stains- garment should be clean before dyeing.

• Use HOT water-125°-160° F.

• Don't wash dyed garments with mixed loads, to avoid staining other clothes in future washings.

• Don't dye woolens in the washer- the agitation will cause shrinkage.

• Selection of color and amount of dye will be determined by original color and size of garment.

• As in any method of dyeing, lace trim on garments may not dye the same color as the rest of the garment.

• Color Remover is not recommended for use in the washer. Since it requires a simmering temperature, it must be done in a utensil over direct heat.
Page 22:

How to REMOVE STAINS

While minor stains will often wash away, serious stains should always be treated before washing. This handy table was developed by Frigidaire Home Economists to give you specific instructions on home treating of certain types of stain.

• Loosely woven or hand-knit garments should NOT be washed in any washer.

SPECIAL

INFORMATION

storage in freezing temperatures

To prevent damage, remove water from all parts of washer:

1. Disconnect all hoses. Pull Timer knob OUT, advance to FILL and push IN. Let Timer advance for 1 or 2 minutes to let water drain from Inlet Valve.

2. Now turn Wash Temperature Selector on Custom DeLuxe and DeLuxe Models back and forth several times.

3. Pull Timer knob OUT, wipe out any water in tub, pull out electric plug and close lid.

Suggestion: Ask your Frigidaire Dealer about a heater accessory to protect Inlet Valve in freezing temperatures.

about installation

1. A separate 15-ampere or 20-ampere utility circuit is recommended for your washer. NEVER plug washer cord into a drop cord or other lighting circuits which are not adequate for the load.

2. Custom DeLuxe and DeLuxe models are equipped with separate hot and cold water hoses. Separate faucets should be provided so the water supply can be turned on and off as required. Super Model WS-59 has a single water inlet hose which can be connected to the swivel faucet of your laundry tub. A "Y" connection for use with separate faucet is available from your Frigidaire Dealer.

moving?

Call your Frigidaire Dealer or Service Station to have the washer tub and mechanism securely fastened to avoid damage during the moving: and for proper installation in your new location.

motor protector

Acts as a fuse to protect motor when overloading occurs-such as excess suds. If this happens, button will pop out and washer will stop. To reset button and remove excess suds:

1. Pull Timer knob OUT; wait 1 minute and push button back IN.

2. Turn Timer to HEAVY Soil setting.

3. Then push knob IN and immediately turn to Right until agitation starts. After about 3 minutes, pull knob OUT, turn to SPIN and push IN to continue cycle. This is usually enough to remove excess suds.

about safety

Your washer should always be grounded. The cold-water hose on Custom DeLuxe and DeLuxe, and single hose and "Y" connection on Super Model WS-59 have a built-in ground wire which grounds washer to house plumbing system.

If washer is relocated, NEVER link this special hose to the house plumbing with an extra length of ordinary hose!

not enough water?

If tub does not fill with enough water- top of vanes for NORMAL Load, slightly more than half-full for SMALL Load -it may be due to low water pressure. If so, other usage should be discouraged when washing.

When a low fill occurs, pull Wash Timer knob OUT, and advance to washing time desired. Then push Timer knob IN and let tub fill again. When proper water level is reached, leave Timer knob IN and turn RIGHT until agitation starts.

NOTE: If you live in an area where water pressure is low, check your Frigidaire Dealer for special controls.
Page 29:

CLEANING AND CARE

When Washing is Done

1. Pull Timer knob OUT.

2. Wipe top and both sides of lid with a damp cloth and close the lid.

3. Turn off hot and cold water faucets to reduce pressure on water hose, and pull out electric plug.

Cleaning the Interior

Porcelain Enamel Tub can be cleaned, after washing, with damp cloth. NOTE: After washing heavily soiled loads, it may be well to wipe the Lint Exits below rim of tub.

Cleaning the Exterior

All models have a durable painted finish. Custom DeLuxe and DeLuxe

Models have Porcelain Enamel cabinet top and lid. Both finishes can be cleaned occasionally with a damp cloth.

For more thorough cleaning, use Frigidaire Surface Renewer on the painted surfaces and Porcelain Speed Cleaner on Porcelain Enamel surfaces. Both are available from your Frigidaire Dealer at minimum cost.

CAUTION: NEVER use harsh, gritty or abrasive cleaner on any surface of your Frigidaire Washer!

TO REPLACE CONTROL PANEL LIGHT

Custom DeLuxe model only

Pry up under top and pull forward, as shown, for access to 20-watt fluorescent lamp.

MOST ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. How can I get my white clothes to look whiter?

A. Often, a reconditioning is helpful in removing accumulated scum and grayness left by some previous washing method. Here's how to go about it: Load clothes into washer as recommended; add from % to 1 cup water softener (Calgon or Tex) to the washer, set Timer on \ HEAVY Soil setting, select hot water, and wash as usual. Repeat as often as necessary until all accumulated soap and scum have been completely washed out of the clothes. Now wash the usual way, using a generous amount of low-sudsing detergent instead of softener.
Page 30:

MOST ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. How can I wash for a longer time? A shorter time?

A. To wash longer-pull Timer knob OUT at beginning of Lint-Away wash, advance to the number of minutes of additional wash desired-each mark on outer rim of dial equals 1 minute. Then push Timer knob IN (washer will start to fill). On Custom DeLuxe and DeLuxe Models, quickly advance Timer to RIGHT (clockwise) until agitation starts. On Super Model allow washer to finish cycle.

To shorten wash-after wash fill is completed, with Timer IN-advance to number of minutes you want to wash. To shorten rinse-advance Timer when rinse agitation begins. (Each click of Timer represents 40 seconds on Normal load setting; 27 seconds on Small load setting-Custom DeLuxe Model.)

Q. How do I get rid of excess suds?

A. (1) Pull Timer knob OUT.

(2) If excess suds have stopped the washing action, wait 1 minute and push Motor Protector Button back IN.

(3) Advance Timer and set at beginning of wash cycle. Push Timer knob IN and immediately turn to right (clockwise) until agitation starts. This starts washer agitating, and water pump will start pumping out excessive suds.

(4) After about 3 minutes' agitation, pull Timer knob OUT; turn to SPIN, and push IN. Usually the washer will continue with the spin and rest of cycle.

REMEMBER-if you want to obtain the very best results from your Frigidaire 3-Ring Agitator Washer, always follow these basic rules for good washing:

1. Proper Sorting-keep "lint makers" like diapers, cotton flannels, etc., out of the load when sheets or shirts are being washed.

2. Load LOOSELY-and don't overload! Not over 9 lbs. for a NORMAL Load; not over 5 lbs. for a SMALL Load.

3. Wash with HOT Water-140° to 160° F., much hotter than your hand can stand, for white and fast colored fabrics.

4. Use an adequate amount of detergent. For heavily soiled or lint producing fabrics, you may find a low sudsing type desirable.

5. Avoid washing too long-the NORMAL soil setting is usually adequate for a load of average soiled clothes.

STOP! If your washer stops operating check these points before you call the serviceman.

• See if Motor Protector Button has popped out (See Page 26).

• If washer has shut off automatically, check to see if Timer knob has popped out. It may be due to an unbalanced load, where clothes gather in one spot. Simply lift the lid and redistribute the clothes. Add another article if necessary to balance load when washing a single heavy item. Then push Timer knob IN.

• Check to see if a fuse has blown. Always replace with a 15-ampere time delay fuse.

• Examine drain hose for kinks.

Thumbnail Image of Download Frigidaire Proudly Presents the Remarkable New Frigidaire Automatic Washer with Live Water Action
This is GM Frigidaire history at its finest. Here is the full brochure handed out in stores in 1947 to show off General Motors entry into the automatic washer field. Large format 8.5 x 11" and has beautiful illustrations as well as full details on every aspect of their new automatic washer. This machine, like GE's first automatic washer spun at 1140rpm, so fast in fact that no top loading automatic washer has yet to beat this spin speed. While many changes happened over the years, the up and down pulsator style agitation of this machines is considered by some to be the best ever produced. Today we only know of one actual surviving 1947 model with all of it's original parts.
