The Silver Anniversary of the Maytag automatic washer

Page 2:

The company's Plant 2 manufacturing complex in Newton, Iowa, is being observed this year.

A program aimed at making consumers aware of the extraordinary value of today's automatic washer is one aspect of the anniversary that is being emphasized; another is the impact that the automatic washer has had on the company's growth.

Special Silver Anniversary identification is being placed on a middle-of-the-line Maytag automatic washer that has been designated as the Silver Anniversary model. In the spirit of the anniversary, the Maytag symbol has been revised to blue on silver nameplate to replace the standard symbol. The anniversary symbol will appear on all company letterheads, advertisements, publications and dealer agreements in 1974.

Advertising and promotions relating to the Silver Anniversary are being built around the consumer value of today's Maytag automatic, as compared to the 1949 Maytag automatic, called the AMP model.

Despite the rise in the cost of living and the decreased purchasing power of today's dollars, the price of a Maytag automatic washer in 1974 is about the same as it was for the first Maytag automatic AMP in 1949.

Company sales 25 years ago were a record $68.5 million an impressive figure in those post-war days, especially in light of the fact that most of the sales came from wringer washers. But those record sales represent only about a third of the 1973 total, which topped the $226 million mark.

The importance of the automatic washer was fully realized only nine years after it was first put into production by Maytag in 1949. The year 1958 is historic for the company because that is the first year in which automatic washer sales exceeded those of wringer washer sales.

The automatic washer also has had a key role in the growth of the company's physical plant and equipment in the last quarter century. (Continued on page 4)

1949- The Model AM or AMP automatic washer offered the homemaker two primary features -a fully automatic cycle, and a choice of hot or warm wash water. Those first automatics were retailed by dealers at slightly under $300.

1974 - Maytag's A407 automatic is one of six in the current automatic washer line. It offers today's homemakers a virtually endless list of wash and rinse speeds, temperatures, water levels, tub sizes, etc., built to accommodate today's broad fabric range. But two things haven't changed: basic product dependability-and the price. Today retailers sell that Model A407 at slightly under $300!

IN 1949 the first Maytag automatic washer rolled down the lines at Maytag's brand new Plant 2 in Newton, Iowa. On these pages we take a nostalgic look at what those 25 years have wrought-in product, in plant facilities, in employees and in dealers. We mark this milestone with considerable corporate and marketing activity in 1974, including a worldwide search for the oldest Maytag automatic washer still in use.

ART THOMAS, Flint Michigan, is one of the many Maytag dealers that has merchandised Maytag products for over 25 years. He has brought Maytag product dependability and prompt, efficient service to thousands of consumers. At left, in 1949 Mr. Thomas demonstrates one of the first Maytag automatics. Below left, is his original store that year. Here, Mr. Thomas today at one of his two stores.

PLANT #2, NEWTON

Maytag's major production facilities have grown nearly ten times over since 1949. We show the original factory at left, and you can identify its dimensions by the lower roof line in the center of today's dramatically expanded facilities below. As reported, major expansions are planned today and, like the original factory and every addition, they have been financed totally from working capital.

THE EMPLOYEE

There are many Maytag men and women who helped produce the original Maytag automatic washer in 1949 and who remain as one of the dependability people today. In 1949 Chuck Crews was 23 years old. Today Chuck is a working foreman in automatic assembly, the father of two married sons, and has been an eyewitness to Maytag's production facility growth.
Page 4:

The Maytag Plant 2 facility, which was built in 1949 specifically for the manufacture of automatic washers, has grown over the years to where it now is six times its original size and has nearly 1.5 million square feet of floor space. In 1974, the plant is still used for the manufacture of automatic washers, but added to the assembly lines has been dryers. There are also support departments for the production of components for Maytag kitchen appliances and wringer washers.

In all, since 1949, the company has invested nearly $95 million for additions, new equipment and modernization. Much of the money was spent at Plant 2. Millions more are earmarked for Plant 2 as part of an expansion program that will increase the company's productive capacity by approximately 75 percent in the next five to eight years. Work on the first phase of this project was started this year.

Twenty-five years after Plant 2 was completed, work continues at the area to expand the manufacturing facilities to keep pace with growth. Here, workmen prepare the site for a 60,000-square-foot addition to a company warehouse building.

Thousands more square feet of manufacturing space will be added to the Plant 2 complex in the near future as part of an expansion program to increase Maytag's productive capacity by 75 percent in the next five to eight years.

Dotted lines show projects in the first phase of the expansion program.

Thumbnail Image of Download Consumer Bulletin Magazine - January 1972
Consumer Bulletin was a highly respected consumer product information magazine from the 1930's onward. It was the main competitor to Consumer Reports from the 1930's through the 1970's.

Articles on Products and Ratings in this issue include:
  • Automatic Dishwashers

  • Full discussion and tests of 13 portable and undercounter dishwashers are conducted.

  • Weather Instruments

  • Small Automobiles

  • Color Film

Please note this issue was lent to our library in a bound volume which could not be taken apart for scanning. An overhead book scanner was used, which produces very good quality scans, albeit with some slight page curling at the margins. The documents are clear and nice to read and the pictures are very good as well, however it's quite not up to the same image quality standard as a flatbed scanner.
