How J L. CLARK'S

manufacturing ingenuity strengthened the competitive position of

Carter's Stamp Pads

For more than 20 years J. L. Clark had supplied lithographed metal containers to The Carter's Ink Co. of Cambridge, Mass., long recognized as one of the country's leading manufacturers of products for office, school, home and industry. When, in 1955, Carter's formulated plans for a revolutionary new line of stamp pad boxes, they turned to Clark, whose reputation for solving widely diversified metal packaging problems spans more than half a century.*

Through creative "know-how" accumulated during many years of handling "tough" production assignments, Clark devised a successful solution for Carter's. Special expanding dies were designed and built. Special finishes were developed. Highly original production techniques permitted the economical manufacture of exceptionally fine boxes.

The new designs for metal boxes were bold and imaginative, well calculated to gain Carter's a new position of leadership. However, the boxes posed manufacturing problems because of their sharply tapered side walls. Other considerations were special inside coatings to insure long life for pad and box and lithography that would prove chip and scratch proof.

The result was a family of new packages having tremendous sales appeal. Wireless-hinged covers and "tip-proof" design assure easy, one-hand operation. Edges were curled out to avoid contact with the ink and were lithographed to indicate ink color. The new boxes gave Carter's unusually effective packaging and a stronger competitive position.
